I could work a shit job, really? Morning all, well late morning, sorry for the lack of update, but I was dead tired after cleaning my A2 apartment out. I eventually fell asleep at 9pm after reading a few chapters of Our Bodies, Ourselves. The final inspection is today so if this is cut short, it's because I'm leaving or having to clean the sticky floor remanent of the juice spill I had last night before said leave. Anyway, yesterday was pretty good. I had a hottie for a cable guy, but I was good and didn't seduce him. I probably should have though because I rarely get that lucky. He was my age, with long brown hair in a ponytail and a goatee, soft brown eyes, nice strong hands and boots, and a nerdy personality to match. He was into RPGs, mainly KNARF, and complimented me on being an artist. Unfortunately, I knew that if I fucked him I probably would like him and want to have a relationship with him and that just wouldn't do. So, I was good and didn't make obvious "call me" passes at him, though I was sorely tempted. Comcast out here is fucked up, for all those of you not living in the slums of Brighton. I had a hella time even subscribing for service and then the tech, who claimed he was a robot, couldn't find the cables. Believing they were in this locked room within the laundry room, he led me down there and, even though I couldn't unlock the laundry room proper, I was able to unlock the mysterious hidden room where, apparently, the cables and wattage meters were. I think I got the wrong key, but it worked so I was happy when we cracked that one. A few router mental issues later, and I have internet! No cable though because I want to try living without TV. I feel like that will keep me more educated than succumbing to our current media system. After all that, I went to Ann Arbor, did the final cleaning and talked to my old boss. Well, I am not getting anything especially interesting. They quoted $24,000 to me for 9 months of work. I would be laidoff for April-August (so, really, 8 months) and then return for the two big semesters each year. On top of this, I learned that Russell got his way and a help desk is being created for the department. So, he's no longer working as a tech but in another function. Scott and Nick got promoted to the two year-long full time positions, which I sort of resent in Nick's case because I had over a year of senoirity on him. That leaves Ben from FPS and myself to fill the two bottom positions. UGH!!!! So, after doing the math, I would be making about $3,000 a month. Not terrible, but keep in mind a few things. 1) That is only slightly higher than my last post-production job was giving me. 2) This wage equals about a million times more bullshit because we have to be more professional. This also means a dress code (I already protested working in heels), higher expectations, more shit to do, more kindness towards everyone expected, and a huge behavior change for moi. 3) I would also have to commute during rush hour, figure out Ann Arbor parking (again), be absolutely certain to be on time, have backup plans (he was uberserious about us being on time and NEVER missing a day due to car problems, which with my long commute is bound to happen at least once), and pay assloads for fuel. 4) The benefits extended suck. I would be getting health care on copay, and extremely limited dental and optical coverage also on copay. On top of which, I would have to only use the HMO's people, a policy I already don't like. 5) Taking this job, though steady, would mean stopping my career because I would not be able to work two jobs. So, yeah, I don't think I'm doing it unless someone has some positives to this arrangement. Anyway, I got to go clean up the sticky floor. Dan, if you're out there, come over tonight for a little while. You can go home and sleep...but say hi unless I'm doing something. Daphne |
