Channel 7 Defense Okay I got to post an update on this for any of ya slack jawed folks who might be watching Channel 7 TV later in the day. Yeah, that grey haired guy, he's my boss's boss. Yeah, the projectors have been stolen a few times over the year and yes, it is a problem...BUT it isn't this huge expose that they are making it out to be. It really isn't. Our department doesn't have enough money to replace the projectors, true, and yes some of our proceedures can be considered a bit unsafe BUT we are always present in our areas and we watch and keep our eyes peeled for weird activity. The shit is also alarmed all to hell. AND *what they don't tell you* is that most of the systems are stolen late at night when nobody is working. The ones in the auditoriums are locked, alarmed, and now behind locked classroom doors. It seems to be about the best we can do because AHA! we have next to no policemen patrolling the UM campus. That's a huge problem too. We have tons of rapes and assualts that even when reported are told that they can't do shit for these women. Our department files reports with the police about problems such as someone unlocking our gear (a recent problem has been that someone has keys to our Master locks, but strangely enough the only thing that has been stolen has been the actual locks and not the equipment) and they do JACK SHIT. So, that really doesn't help! The other major defense is that the original article that kicked this thing off has nothing to really back up their assertions. Yeah, stuff has been stolen before and after this great coverage I am sure more theives will be heading to UM to tear out more equipment. GREEEAATTTT Right? Yuppers, and if you want to actually find the damn things my boss suggests talking to bars around Michigan who probably are using the things for their big sports projections. And they should be relatively easy to spot due to the fact that they will be covered with white paint numbers on them and our office info engraved on them. *something the report probably won't tell you either* Not that this is the end of the world. Theives regularly walk the library to rip off student's stuff if they leave it unattended. Of course, nobody does anything about this except post signs telling kids to not walk off but that never works. And so we waste the little time the cops have filing those reports too. And they don't investigate our robbies. Ah well...so it goes. Keep this in mind though when watching the news tonight. Daphne |
