work explained hey all, there isn't much to say today except that I sent a note off to the girl that I like but I haven't heard anything back yet so I am a little concerned. I might phone her but I am not sure if that is too forward. Maybe I will wait another day and do it. Hopefully she just hasn't been checking her mail and still likes me. not getting my hopes up though, so many women have disappointed me in the past. anyway, I have decided to make this the work entry, i.e. the entry that attempts to explain my job, what I do, how long I have been doing it and my situation basically. I have about half an hour and that should be enough. To open: my dayjob is Media Services. This ranges the gambit from powerpoint presentations to ancient beta decks and yes, I have to know it all. In fact, I tend to consider myself the only student worker that correctly knows how to thread a 16mm projector. I almost worked for the auditorium people and wanted to develop that skill but more on that later. There are three branches of the big department, one that does classrooms only, one that does auditoriums and big events only, and one that loans out equipment. I started and remain in the last catagory with one promotion to the classroom work last year. I began this job in August of 2001 working in loan and that was pretty much okay. After working an entire summer on inventory with two or three other people, I was given the nice job of being a semiboss while my big boss took his three week vacation. Around this time I discovered that some of the other staff were being paid a higher salary, despite their incredible suckiness at their jobs. Something like 10 bucks an hour where I was supervising at 7.50, kind of sucks...hence why bosses insist that you never discuss salary! So, I complained, I also fucked up the management position because my big boss didn't leave any assignments and sort of wanted me to figure that out on my own...heh heh, sounds a lot like him too. After complaining, honestly all I wanted was to be like 8.50 when the Fall started, I heard about the auditorium subbranch was looking for people so I tried interviewing there. No such luck due to lack of hours in my schedule but she did refer me to the classroom people who, after some deliberation because I am an undependable student, decided to hire me which saved them money and gave me some more money and prestige. How did I get back here? hahaha well, they force you to quit for about four months except for two people over there so I had to go. In fact, I am guessing that last year was the only year I could work for them because they really want another full time person and not someone like me. The irony on that one is that I worked harder than most of the full time staff and they fired the only other person that actually worked without too many issues...booze, sex, sleeping on the job, etc. because she couldn't put in enough hours cause they weren't paying her enough. So I was forced out and with nowhere to go I asked my big boss here for a summer job and he gave it to me with the pay cut back down to 8 I think. Keep in mind I was making 9.50 before. Of course, I still have to take August off without pay so that they won't have to declare me as permanent staff, which sucks, but I will survive. No plan for that as of yet but I am hoping to possibly live off of savings -ha!- or mooch or attempt to work part time as an escort or something. so about job duties...well, in the classroom half I used to teach profs how to run powerpoint shows, mics, and everything else...well, except overheads, profs are lousy with overheads. right now, my job is relegated to office work where I take orders, balence weird equipment ledgers, occasionally fix stuff, test stuff constantly, rebuild computers with my little boss, and work pretty constantly. That's one of the things I miss from my last job, being able to sit down and do stuff when I had downtime, here my big boss screams and finds me some new work. oh yea, should introduce the bosses...well not by name of course! the little boss transferred here from managing a music library and he is pretty cool...in fact one of the few white people I know from African American Studies. He arrived last summer when I was supervising and I had to show him how to do rebuilds on most of the machines. more irony, I forgot how to do that stuff so now he gets to show me. He's pretty cool, odd taste in music, but not freaking out about anything and mellow enough to counter the big boss...the old little boss who now works at a similar job as our big boss but in social work school was a bit better because he knew more and could advise you more what to do and was more hands on and fun but at the time while he was working I was, well, a little too wild, so our personalities didn't mesh and I don't think that he could see me any other way. hence, why I don't apply for a job with him, even though he took a coworker who does SHIT on the job. funny, how lazy coworkers can always make better money than I do. as for the big boss...he has been here in my job since he studied at the music school and seems to have never left. his speciality is sound and freaking out about small stuff. honestly, I think he has OCD. he spends days trying to find ways to make us more efficient, which then mess the entire staff up for at least a week. his other main downfall is that he sucks at helping people. If you have a question it will take hours to get at the answer and the answer is always clouded in buts and ifs, assuming you don't get a keep working on it as your advice. fact is, I think that he would rather just run the office over here by himself if he could...but sadly he can't so we all learn to deal with it. I have about ten mins before he rolls in so I should get going. hope this helps explain my job to y'all. daphne |
