Adopting a Dauchshund Soon okay, I've got another slight obession these days...finding a doggie. Yeah, I know, officially I haven't owned my own dog before. I've shared a few, and I know what to do, but I haven't had one of own. Kind of like kids, but easier. My big worry is teaching the puppy potty training. If I can do that, everything else should be fairly easy. I missed out on the perfect mini-Dauchshund this weekend, but that just prompted me to look harder for a local breeder. She was SO cute though, and just what I needed, a laid back non-barking quiet animal. Her new mommy showed up just before I did though, so she went home with her, though part of me thinks she preferred me. Every time her old owner told her to go to her new mommy, she'd turn around and look at me. I nearly got into a bidding war, but I told myself to be a gentlemen and let it go. So, now I'm talking to breeders for litters in the next few weeks. It will probably be a couple of months, but at least I'll be getting plans in place. I've found two in the Howell area, and one towards Mid-Michigan, which is more than I thought I'd find. The Mid-Michigan one costs more ($600/pup) but they are really thorough with their follow ups and they're a really reliable breeder. So, I'll have an additional resource for any future questions, and the puppy will have some extended family to visit, which I like. They raise theirs on a unique mostly meat diet though, so I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad one. They say their dogs are generally healthier than most though, so maybe the additional cost won't be an issue. The Howell breeders, the one that wrote back anyway, will be attending a dog show in two weeks at Cobo. I might go. Some of their dogs will be there so I can get an idea of their health and upbringing. If she's much cheaper than the mid state breeder, I might go with her. I do like the idea of being able to stay in touch with a breeder, but going so far upstate with that high cost isn't easily feasable. If that's what the breed normally sells for though, I might stick with them. All depends on how the local breeders are, as I'd rather keep it close to home, if possible. So, yeah, getting a puppy!!! Eventually!!! If you've got dogs that want a playdate lemme know ;) Daphne |
