Michigan Weather, for out of staters... Okay, this is more pure whining and some slight attempt at education for anyone who is reading this out-of-state. For the record, I live in Michigan, in the suburbs of Detroit. This isn't a horrible location (despite the state losing jobs and detroit deciding to lay off even more people as of last night), but at times living in Michigan sucks. Normally, we call these times winter and summer, though rainy springs and super cold falls don't help either. Summer in Michigan is pretty typical and is getting better. The main problem is the heat and the humidity. When it gets warm, it stays wet so all the bugs can smell you and then devour you. So, other than sweating to death standing around outdoors (or god forbid without an air conditioner!) the summer isn't too bad. Now, the winters tend to be rough with lots of snow and ice. This is because Michigan is surrounded by water. When the front goes over Lake Michigan on the West, it picks up EVEN MORE WATER so when it hits the western edge of the state it has more snow to dump on it. This means cities like Kalamazoo get more snow than people on my side of the state. Of course, Detroit gets more snow too because of the lake effect than it would normally get, but compared to the amounts on the western edge or above midland (the middle of the lower peninsula) it's workable. This year, however, the weather has been crazier than usual. Michigan is known for the phrase "don't like the weather, wait ten minutes, it'll change" because we can go from sunny and warm to snowing all within a day, and this winter nearly proves it. Over the past couple of weeks we've been going through crazy snowing, melting, and raining cycles. Basically, it'll snow about 4-6 inches, then stop. We all gripe, dig out the cars, and then it starts freezing rain. Go through that for a couple of hours then it gets warm. For the next few days, it feels like spring. All the snow melts and i go hiking. Then, like right now, a ton of rain starts pouring down for a few days. Then it gets cold again and the snow hits. *ick* I guess the moral of this story is, don't move to Michigan! I'd like to move out, but the contract paperwork still hasn't arrived. I hate to keep holding onto a dream deferred, but it's all I've got right now. Daphne |
