Imminent Gym Decision Well, I think I've figured out the exercise quandry. I am going to try and jog with Jessica those days we can but I am going to supplement that with a gym membership to the YMCA. I decided this based on two factors: 1) Charity. The Y is much more people friendly and charitible in that it works with kids, older people, and generally everyone. I am not sure I dig the Christian vibe about it, but it's better than buying into corporate America a.k.a. Bally's. 2) Less expensive. Although not all inclusive and as easy to deal with as Bally's, the Y charges less for basic access to the machines and the pool, both of which are what I primarily need. They also don't try and sell the personal trainer angle, even though they DO give you equipment orientation, which is what I need. As for classes, they run about $20-$40 per class, which isn't bad because classes only meet once a week for 8 weeks. Therefore, if I take 1-2 classes per offering I have already knocked out two days of workout, leaving the other three days to machines/swimming. 3) Access. Although Bally's is everywhere, I can walk to the Y. This saves gas money. I also phoned the Milford Y and I can use their facilities 15 times with the Ann Arbor card before they start charging or asking me if I want to transfer. Although I think Bally's would be better for changing gyms, it's also a drive from Dan's house. The Milford one really isn't. I may use up the 15 passes quickly, but by then I should be moved in with him and/or in Arkansas. 4) Commitment or lack thereof. The Y wants about 3 months of membership before you cancel it. I get that and it's only a loss of about $200 if I never use the joint. Bally's, however, lets you leave during the first month of the contract but if you stay it's $60 a month for three years. I have also heard of some pains from people trying to leave Bally's after 4+ years and getting charged some heavy ass fees. Not for me. I need flexibility. So, I think it's the Y for me. I am going out to meet another photographer, despite today and tomorrow's sets being cancelled *goddamnit this makes me lose money!*, but after that I will see if I can start classes/working out today.
